WOW! Can you believe twenty-twenty is over? It has been a year with many challenges to meet, but we survived. We always do. Let us look forward to a better year with challenges resolved and peace and harmony to replace them.
Today was my birthday. Every year my daughter, Darchele, and her husband Tony take me to lunch at Red Lobster. This year we had it delivered to the house. It was yummy, and I ate every bite. 😊 Then we watched the new movie with Harrison Ford, “The call of the wild.” It was incredibly good. It made me laugh, and it made me cry, and it made me think about the dogs deep abiding love.
Charity is the highest form of Love as described in the following quote by Paul, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” (I Corinthians 13:0–13)
I love this quote; it clearly states that Love is the crowning glory. Without it, nothing else matters. This love is what I try to bring into every day of every new year. To me, the Golden Rule is how we practice Charity. “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)
To love as God wants us to love, we need to be careful of false judgment. “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (John 7:24) “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matthew 7:1–3)
I like the part about not judging according to appearances. Many times in the past, I was ready to jump in and criticize before I knew the whole story. That always got me into trouble. I have since learned that before I judge anything to make sure I have all the facts and then, if asked, offer constructive criticism as it comes from love. If not asked, I have learned to keep my remarks to myself; it is none of my business unless invited in. That is difficult as I always seem to want to step in with advice. My daughter never hesitates to let me know; if she wants my advice, she will ask for it. 😊 This is a lesson I had to be reminded of several times before it sank in.
I learned that I do not know where others are in their struggles to become a better person, and if I jump in and say something, I might be trampling hard on their efforts without knowing it, which can be very hurtful. I am better off if I tend to my own garden.
We are all God’s children, and we travel down the same road, but at different speeds. It is not up to me to push friends down the road but to lead by example. I can only do that if I get my own act straight. I still have some weeds in my garden, so I certainly cannot be judging others for their weeds. “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” Exceptionally good advice.
Since we are all walking down the same road, let us walk together, strong, and face down the evil in this world and bring out God’s creation for all to see. “Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.” (Psalms 89:15)
We have the power to make this world a better place in 2021.
Love to you all, and Happy New Year.
