Our spiritual journey is individual. I write my blogs to share my experiences and what I have learned. I hope that the seeds I plant will inspire you to do some research on your own, that will grow into a better understanding of your relationship to the divine creator, God. We all come from a different past, and the understanding I get from my study may be different from yours.
I love sharing with you what I have learned and how that understanding has changed my life for the better. I have read many books, but the two I use the most are the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These books can be challenging to understand and require a lot of deep thought, but it is worth the effort. I could not just peruse them; they need to be digested. I needed to seek the spiritual understanding that lies beneath the human-inspired words.
Only by elevating my consciousness to a spiritual level can I see God’s words come through. How I did that was by setting aside all understanding that came through the five physical senses. I discovered if it could be measured, by the senses, it was not spiritual and not substantial. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) “Spirit is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God. Things spiritual and eternal are substantial. Things material and temporal are insubstantial.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 335:12) Love is substantial, you cannot see Love as it is not a thing that can be measured, but you can see the evidence of Love in human behavior. “…let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us:” Psalms 90:17 Beauty is an expression of Soul, God, and the eternal evidence of it is not physical but spiritual, kindness, pleasantness, grace, harmony, wisdom and peace.
The old testament is a wealth of lessons if you can get past the human tragedies and find them. But the new testament is most important. It is the testament of Love. Jesus gave us the tools to carve out a blessed life if you can glean the spiritual meaning of the things he taught. He knew the five senses could not measure the truth of who we are. He defied all the physical laws and lived only by divine law. “One on God’s side is a majority.”
Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; …” “… the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:16, 26)
If this comforter abides with me forever, it cannot be of the flesh. Jesus was clear that the comforter is the Holy Ghost, and it will bring all things that he taught to my remembrance. Then the comforter (Holy Ghost) is the development or unfoldment of my understanding of all Jesus taught of God and eternal life. I know that I am very comforted in all that has come to remembrance in me about Jesus and God.
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (John 15:26)
In conclusion, the comforter cannot be physical, so it must be mental. It is the “Holy Ghost,” or “the spirit of truth,” the understanding that “proceedeth from the Father,” which is revealed to me when I seek it, and it comforts me. It is there for all of us. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” (Matthew 7:7, 8)
“For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” (John 3:34) Jesus had a complete spiritual understanding, the Holy Spirit without measure.
Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)
It took me a while to figure out what the Holy Ghost was. The term “he” can throw you off in the above quotes. It merely signifies “it.” I investigated all 89 mentions of the Holy Ghost in the Bible, all in the new testament. It became clear to me that it was not a being of any kind. Consider this statement, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 1:18) Mary’s conception of Jesus came from her enlighten spiritual understanding, the Holy Ghost, of God and his creation.
Here is another one, “But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:” (Mark 3:29). If you do not develop a spiritual understanding, you will never reach Heaven, which is a spiritual state of mind. You will always remain in a mortal state of mind.
To be comforted, I needed to develop a spiritual state of mind, the “Holy Ghost,” or the “Spirit of truth.” I needed to understand God and his relation to Jesus. I needed to know that as His creation, I am inseparable from Him as His idea, His image, and likeness, His reflection. Christ is God’s idea, the same as we are His idea, but not in the flesh. We are a spiritual idea, an image in Mind. When I learned to see myself that way, my life changed. I am of the Holy Ghost. I am comforted.
“Jesus’ unchanged physical condition after what seemed to be death was followed by his exaltation above all material conditions; and this exaltation explained his ascension, and revealed unmistakably a probationary and progressive state beyond the grave. Jesus was “the way;” that is, he marked the way for all men. In his final demonstration, called the ascension, which closed the earthly record of Jesus, he rose above the physical knowledge of his disciples, and the material senses saw him no more.”
“His students then received the Holy Ghost. By this is meant, that by all they had witnessed and suffered, they were roused to an enlarged understanding of divine Science, even to the spiritual interpretation and discernment of Jesus’ teachings and demonstrations, which gave them a faint conception of the Life which is God. They no longer measured man by material sense.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 46:20–5)
The comforter is here now, and available to all.
