God’s ageless quality

For those who will soon be considered a senior, or those who have already reached that age, like me, this is for you. Getting older is not all bad, it does have its advantages, you get all kinds of discounts, it makes you eligible to retire from your jobs. Now that is a good thing for most, but others choose to work till they drop.

With age, there are lots of gains, like the wisdom of years of experience and a clearer idea of who we are. We learn to let go of the small things, and that having an orderly home is not as important as having a loving home. We do not seem to worry as much. Most of us are not as quick to judge. We have all made our mistakes. You can probably add more to this list of gains.

I have learned a lot of things about overcoming the negative connotation associated with seniors. The first thing I did was to stop thinking of myself as a number. The longer I am here in this experience, the more I learn about who I am in relation to God. That is undoubtedly more important than affixing a number to me.

I had to counter all the claims about age. The most important one is the claim that as you age, your memory starts to fail. OMG, who made the rule. From the time we are born, we are subjected to claims about age. We hear it on TV, from our parents, teachers, ministers, grandparents, and many other sources. By the time we are an adult, we believe all the propaganda about aging without even knowing why. It just becomes a part of our belief system, and as I have heard many times, “as you believe, so be it.”

We tend to believe what those around us are demonstrating in their lives.  I learned not to compare myself with others, and especially not family members. “What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: …” (Ezekiel 18:2–4 (to :)) This is about heredity and tells me that we only inherit from our Divine Father/Mother God. We need not fear what our human parents are demonstrating in their lives.

We are God’s image and likeness, His reflection. If that is so, think about this, God does not age, so we do not age. OK, it certainly looks like we are aging, but think deeper. God’s spiritual creation never changes; it is a part of Him. “For IN him we live, and move, and have our being; … For we are also his offspring.” (Acts 17:28) When we understand this and believe this, we will demonstrate this in our life. I have known many people that have aged gracefully, maintained their mental capacities and health. When it was time for them to go, they passed from this experience peacefully.

There have been times when I could not recall something. I just let it go, and shortly it popped into my thought. That is not evidence of faulty memory. Sometimes we have many things on our mind, and our recall slows down a bit. Just like our computers when they get overloaded, they slow down a bit. Don’t think about it, don’t let it concern you or make you believe there is a problem, because that will make it more real to you and you will demonstrate that in your life. Put it out of our thought, do not talk about it, just go on with your day.

As the years go by, there is a belief that we become more confused about things. Stuff becomes harder to understand, this is just a belief that our physical bodies and brains are aging and less effective. We are letting our bodies have control over us instead of Mind, God. Our comprehension and receptivity are not flawed because they come from God. They are a part of His creation. We are alert and decisive as they, too, are qualities of God. We can only lack these things in belief. Change your mindset, and you change your circumstances.

You either believe in God or your physical body, which will it be? I know that you cannot see God or your spiritual essence, the man of His creation, but they are real, and you can see their evidence, as it states in Hebrews 11:1. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Mrs. Eddy answers the “Question. — What is substance? Answer. — Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. Truth, Life, and Love are substance, as the Scriptures use this word in Hebrews: “The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance. The spiritual universe, including individual man, is a compound idea, reflecting the divine substance of Spirit.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468:16–24). If we understand God and our relationship to Him, believe in Him, we will see that belief evidenced in our experience here and now.

We do not need to lose our mental or physical faculties because we have lived a certain number of years, as the spiritual substance does not grow old or decay. God created only the spiritual universe, and it is up to us to bring the evidence of His creation, through what we believe and understand, into our experience here.

I intend to do just that, what about you?

To understand God strengthens hope, enthrones faith in Truth, and verifies Jesus’ word: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 446:20)
